What is an Electromagnet :

When a bar or any other piece of soft iron is placed inside a solenoid (cylindrical coil of insulated wire) carrying an electric current, it gets magnetized and behaves as a magnet as long as the current is on. When the current is switched off, the magnet netism disappears and the piece of iron reverts to its original unmagnetized state, while magnetism in a permanent magnet is a static phenomenon.
